Your Baby and the Sun Safety Tips

Temperatures are rising and you and your new little bundle are getting ready to head outdoors. Do not overlook the care of your baby and the sun. You want your little one to be able to enjoy the warmer temperatures and have fun outside, but you also want to make sure he/she is safe from the sun. After all, the sun has been a major topic of concern lately and one of your first concerns is your child’s health.

Here are a few tips to help you handle your baby and the sun. Covering up is the best way to avoid too much sun exposure.

Dress your child in lightweight cotton clothing to allow air passage. This way he/she will not overheat, but will be protected from the sun. Be sure to cover visible skin if sun exposure will be prolonged such as a trip to the beach, a zoo, or a park. These all day outings can lead to excessive sun exposure that can be damaging to your little one’s skin.

If covering up entirely is not an option, most of the major sunscreen producers have a line of product designed for baby’s sensitive skin. Be sure to try a little on a small spot first to check for sensitivities. In the case that there are no sensitivities, be sure to use at least an SPF of 30 for your baby. The sunscreen should be reapplied every few hours or if going in water, applied as soon as you and baby get out of the water.

If your little one is less than six months old, it’s best to keep them in shade as much as possible.If you’re going to the park or zoo,

take advantage of shaded areas. There are trees and buildings that provide shade in both of those locations. If you’re going somewhere where there is little shade like a beach, bring shade with you in the form of a beach umbrella. Make sure your little one stays in the shaded area as much as possible. For older children, limited sun exposure should not pose a great risk as long as they are protected with sunscreen. Shaded areas and clothing that covers are still best, but they are not always practical. Again, when using sunscreen be sure to reapply every few hours as sweating or water from a pool or lake will lessen the effectiveness of the sunscreen. Reapplying will ensure that the full potency of the sunscreen is constantly in effect.

Protection from the sun is vital for all of us. We like to enjoy the outdoors and the sun, but we must stay protected from its harmful effects. When we are responsible with the time we spend outdoors with our little ones, we will have a great time and our bodies and health will not have to pay the price. Clothing, shaded areas, and sunscreen are some of our very best friends during the peak times of the sunny season. Having fun in the sun should never hurt and it doesn’t have to when you make the appropriate choices for protection.
