Being a new parent is not only a happy joyous time but it can also be confusing and sometimes frustrating. Treating your child for diaper rash can add to the frustration. First know that if your child gets diaper rash, it is not the end of the world and it certainly does not mean you are a horrible, unfit parent. Diaper rash is exactly what the name says, a rash inside the area of your baby’s diaper. There are few different types of diaper rashes, but all can easily be treated at home. When looking at the rash,

it will look red and may resemble skin that is a little sunburned and it will usually have a slightly puffy appearance. Besides the rash, you won’t notice a lot of symptoms, except maybe your baby becoming a little fussier and fidgety during diaper changes.
It may sound silly, but the best treatment of diaper rash is changing the diaper. The main cause of diaper rash is the baby’s skin being irritated by urine and stool. There are other factors to consider like have you introduced any new foods. This can produce more stool, which can lead to a rash. If you are breastfeeding, a food that you have eaten may cause a reaction, especially a tomato-based food. Another place to consider for the cause of the rash is did you recently change any of your baby products like wipes, powders or diapers. This can also cause diaper rash.
Each baby is different, so your child may just be more susceptible to getting diaper rash, especially if he has sensitive skin. There are many over-the-counter creams for the treatment of diaper rash that will help make the rash less painful and they will aid in healing the rash faster.
The best way to prevent diaper rash is to keep your baby as clean and dry as possible. Make sure when you are changing your baby, you clean the

area very well with a wipe. Using powder will help keep the skin healthy and dry. Most importantly, make sure the diaper fits properly. A diaper that is too tight will dry the skin out because there is no airflow. If the skin cannot “breathe”, it will dry out and unhealthy skin is more apt to become irritated.
Using a diaper that “breathes” and that has leak controls is another idea to help keep your baby’s skin healthy and diaper rash free. If your baby seems to have sensitive skin, you may need to change his diapers far more frequently or try leaving the diaper off for a little while. If you have made the adjustments and your baby is repeatedly getting diaper rash, check with your day care provider and make sure they are using the same products and are paying as close attention to your baby’s care as you are.
Being a new parent, if it makes you feel better the first time you see a rash, visit your pediatrician. They can reassure you and also provide you with some information on what diaper rash is and offer more ideas for the treatments as well.
