What is breastfeeding?
After you have a baby, your body naturally makes milk through glands in your breasts so you can feed your baby. You can feed your baby through breastfeeding shortly after giving birth.
What are the benefits of breastfeeding your child?
There are so many benefits to breastfeeding. It’s all natural. Your breast milk has all the nutrients your baby needs.

It’s hands-down better than bottle-feeding. It will even help you lose your pregnancy weight and help you get back to pre-pregnancy state faster. When breastfeeding, you and your baby will have plenty of bonding time. Babies need to feel the physical touch of their mother to feel safe and secure. Breastfeeding eases and calms them.
What are the disadvantages of Breastfeeding?
One disadvantage to breastfeeding is that, if you plan on returning to work outside your home, you will have to pump the milk from your breasts and refrigerate it for your baby. Another is that it can get a little overwhelming constantly having to be there for your baby.
Sometimes, your baby might try to bite your breast, which can be painful, especially when they grow teeth! When babies are teething, they will want to gnaw on anything, including your breasts. You can help by opening her mouth (don’t just pull her off, that will hurt) and removing her.

You can use a method to help her associate biting you with no more breastfeeding time, such as taking her off and putting her down. Soon, she will put the two together that when she bites, you will stop breastfeeding. When she figures that out, she will do it much less.
What steps or procedures a mom should take to ensure that her child is being breastfeed properly?
A lot of new moms worry about breastfeeding correctly and that’s completely normal. When you give birth in a hospital, ask the nurses all the questions about proper breastfeeding while you can. Most of them are very helpful.
1. It’s best to try nursing about an hour after giving birth to take advantage of your baby’s sucking instinct.
2. Experimenting with different positions can mean the world. In one position, your baby or you might not be comfortable, but by simply shifting your position, it can help both of you.
3. You will probably hear the phrase “proper latch-on” from your nurses. Your medical professional will help you and your baby get appropriate latch-on and this will reduce any pain you might be having.
4. Look for early signs of your baby’s hunger. Don’t wait for her to cry. When she’s making sucking noises or motions and moving her head around trying to find your breast, she’s probably hungry. Your baby will feel more at ease because you are meeting her needs without her having to cry for them.
5. Try to keep track of nursing times so you can create a schedule for yourself. It will help both of you as you know ahead of time when she will probably be hungry.
How long is it recommended that a mother breastfeed her child?
You can actually breastfeed your baby as long as you wish. Ask your preferred medical professional what his or her opinion is. It may not be emotionally healthy to be breastfeeding a 5 year old, but everyone has varying opinions on this matter. It’s best to talk it over with your medical professional. If you can breastfeed for approximately one year, you have given your baby the best nutrition she could have for the first year of her life. And remember, breastfeeding for any amount of time is a great accomplishment!
