The Importance of Infant Safety

Infant safety is something that should be taken into consideration prior to even having children. When preparing to have a child, parents should consider their home and location along with the many interior safety issues. There are many safety issues involved during pregnancy to be considered and, also, as early as the day you bring your baby home. Each and every day, week and month, the milestones your baby makes will amaze you, so it always better to be prepared ahead of time.

You can never be too careful. Besides, if your little one decides to smile for the first time while you are busy putting outlet covers in, you will miss that moment and what fun would that be?

One of the infant safety issues to be explored when you consider having children is the location of your home. Things such as a lakefront property or living near a busy street can be a reason to either relocate or put up a fence. During your pregnancy, definite consideration should be taken for your own health and safety, as well as your child’s. Some examples of these things would be how well you eat and do you exercise? Three major safety issues are whether you smoke, drink or use any type of drugs, illegal or prescribed. The key to keeping your child safe begins in the womb.

Once you get your child home and she starts doing those unexpected things, like rolling over in the middle of a diaper change, always make sure you do not leave your baby unattended on a surface they can fall from. As your infant gets older and starts to scoot or crawl, be aware that they are quick. A general rule of thumb is that babies taste everything and if anything can fit in a toilet paper tube, your infant can choke on it. They will also reach for anything, so make sure you do not leave anything heavy or sharp within their reach. And plug those outlets! You would never guess how many things children can fit in those holes!

Here is a general list to follow when child-proofing your home; smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, outlet covers, safety gates, cabinet latches, drawer latches, toilet latches, knob covers for doors and over knobs, window guards and blind wraps, corner bumpers and toilet latches.

It is always better to be safe and overcautious to prevent an accident. As always, the best way to prevent and ensure infant safety is to never leave your baby unattended. Besides, if you do, you might miss something and that in and of itself is too risky.
